Hanche Wayne Gissell was born September 2, 1817 in Wulschoff, Hanover, Germany. He arrived in New York in June of 1830. From there he went to Charleston, South Carolina in 1836. Hanche married Lucy Ann Pundt in Charleston, South Carolina. He was one of the Signers of the Constitution of the German Colonization Society at Walhalla, Pickens County, South Carolina and served as President. Hanche enlisted in the Confederate Army in the 1st Regiment of the State Troops for South Carolina for 6 months. His physical description was 5'10, Fair Complexion, Brown Eyes and Light Hair. He was discharged from Confederate Services on September 26, 1863 due to the medical reason of Phthisis Pulmonalis. He died July 24, 1871 at Johnston's Row, East Bay Street, Charleston, South Carolina. He is buried at the Bethany Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina.
